READING LIST

  1. Manic-Depressive Illness.  F.K. Goodwin and K.R. Jameson.   New York: Oxford University Press, 1990.  This is an excellent, comprehensive book that provides a great deal of information and addresses many issues surrounding bipolar disorder.

  2.  Mood Genes: Hunting for Origins of Mania and Depression.  Samuel H. Barondes, MD.  W.H. Freeman and Company, 1998.  This book discusses the role of genetics in manic depression.

  3. Call Me Anna, The Autobiography of Patty Duke.  Patty Duke and Keith Turan.  Bantam, 1987.  An inside look at Patty Duke’s experiences as a troubled youth.

  4. Dealing Effectively with Depression and Manic Depression.  Mary Ellen Copeland, MS.  This brief brochure details a recovery option that can be customized to each individual.

  5. Depression and Antidepressants, A Guide.  Lithium Information Center, University of Wisconsin, 1995.  A discussion tailored for the layperson about both depression and the medications used in treatment.

  6. The Depression Workbook: A Guide for Living with Depression and Manic Depression.  Mary Ellen Copeland, MS.  Newharbinger Publications, Inc. 1992.  This workbook’s author is both a mental health professional and an individual affected with a mood disorder.  She provides very helpful information on how to maintain one’s own wellness.

  7. Expert Consensus Treatment Guidelines for Bipolar Disorder: A Guide for Patients and Families.  NDMDA, 1997.  An article that addresses the most commonly asked questions about bipolar disorder.

  8. An Unquiet Mind, A Memoir of Moods and Madness.  Kay Redfield Jamison, PhD.  Alfred A.  Knopf, 1995.  A powerful account of a well-known psychologist’s struggles with manic depression and her determination to control her symptoms
